Good leaders know it’s ok to ask for help, and our Cooking Club chefs proved it this week! Yesterday’s session had a Halloween twist, with pizza mummies on the menu. Working with pastry takes precision and plenty of patience, especially with warm little hands! The amazing Sophie showed the children how to cut and lay the strips, then it was over to them. When a mummy started to unravel, they weren’t afraid to ask for help. And once they’d got it sorted, they were straight over to help a friend get theirs wrapped up too! Guess who popped in unannounced, mid-lunch for 400 children, with visiting musicians in, and our Head Chef away? The food hygiene inspector! And the verdict? Five stars again! ⭐ That makes ten consecutive years of five-star inspections for our catering team. It’s no surprise to us. Behind every meal is a team who deeply care about what our children eat. Last Friday afternoon the hall was buzzing as our pupils gathered for this year’s Poetry Recital Competition! One by one they took to the stage, delivering everything from giggle-worthy to goosebump-inducing performances. Anyone who was there will agree there was plenty of leadership on show, from the pupils cheering each other on to the bravery it takes to stand up in front of the whole room. A huge thank you to our judge, Kate Chesworth. Kate has performed at some of the country’s leading regional venues as well as in the West End, and now shares her experience with students as a Drama and LAMDA teacher at Thomas’s Fulham. With so much talent on show, Kate had a very tough decision to make, but in the end the trophy went to Year 8 student… OLLIE! 🏆 Huge congratulations to Ollie and to all our other wonderful performers!
Before they can lead others, our Nursery children are learning to believe in themselves! 💪 In gymnastics with Mr Rodriguez and Mr Underwood, a wobbly first try turns into “let me try again!”, and that perseverance is how they discover they can do more on their own. A change of tactics for our U9 boys at last week’s tournament! ⚽ Our Director of Sport, Mr Bather, explains: “Our U9 boys had to rethink their tactics and move into different positions to support the team. They had to work out where they could be most useful, rather than just where they were used to playing. Although it wasn’t the result we’d hoped for, it was a pleasure to play against such strong teams. How do you get food through a pair of tights? Ask Year 4! Our scientists have been exploring how food travels through the digestive system, using tights to stand in for the intestines. The challenge? Getting the food all the way through! So our problem-solvers put their heads together… – Would breaking the food into smaller pieces help? – What if we changed how we squeezed the tights? – Could adding water make a difference? Who knew digestion could take so much brainpower? With every attempt, they learned a little more about what helps food on its journey through our bodies. Messy? Definitely. Lots of thinking? Absolutely! 🙌

Our annual Christmas card competition is underway, with children creating their own festive designs to turn into cards for family and friends. Turning an idea into a finished design takes some thought! It means working out how to bring what’s in your head onto the page and what will make your card eye-catching. Baby Bear needs a shelter… Reception to the rescue! 🐻🍂 Reception had the most magical day at Painshill Park last week, following a storytelling trail that led them right into Little Red Riding Hood’s woods before they bumped into the Three Little Pigs and, of course, Goldilocks! Then came a challenge: could they build a shelter for Baby Bear? They had to work out which materials would do the job, heading off in search of the “biggest, best leaves” and sticks big enough to build with! There was plenty to think about before Baby Bear could move in! Which sticks would make the strongest shelter? How could they keep the leaves in place? Would their shelter keep Baby Bear dry? Was there enough room for him inside? Well done to our little builders with their big ideas! ⭐

At Highfield, we see this in all sorts of ways. It’s our Reception children figuring out how to build a shelter strong enough to keep Baby Bear dry. It’s Year 4 exploring digestion using a pair of tights in Science! And it’s our U9 footballers rethinking their tactics to help their team. As Suzannah explains, sometimes it’s how you get from A to Z that’s more interesting than the answer itself!

Our Year 8s have been busy preparing their canvases with diluted inks in different colours, ready for a mixed-media project exploring the theme of identity. 🎨 It’s a lovely example of how art encourages children to adapt. You might start with one idea in mind, but as colours blend and materials behave in unexpected ways, you have to think on your feet and try something different. And who knows?
