One placethat respects every individual child
Our Boarding
Boarding at Highfield is one of the most valued and distinctive parts of school life. It is always completely optional, but for many families it becomes one of the most rewarding choices they make. Our flexible, contemporary boarding provision is designed to suit modern family life, without diluting the strong sense of community and care that boarding here is built on.
We offer genuine full boarding alongside weekly and flexi options, and roughly a third of our boarders choose each. Families who want a proper full boarding option have increasingly fewer places to find that locally, particularly at prep school age. At Highfield, full boarding remains a real, well-established choice.
Our boarding numbers grow steadily through the year, typically starting around 80 in September and reaching close to 130 by the summer term, as more families discover what boarding offers once they try it.
Around 80% of our boarders are British, with the remainder from overseas. That balance matters to us. It means Highfield feels like a genuinely British boarding school, the experience many of our families are specifically choosing, while still being a place where children from different countries are a valued part of everyday life.
Parents consistently tell us boarding is one of the greatest strengths of a Highfield education. They value it as a gentle, supportive bridge between home and senior school, helping children grow in confidence, independence and resilience while remaining close to a familiar community. Children tell us something a little different, but just as powerful, they talk about friendship, fun and laughter.
Living in one big family surrounded by all your favourite people to have one massive sleepover every night.

Why Choose Highfield Boarding?
Families choose boarding at Highfield for different reasons, but the themes are remarkably consistent: breadth of opportunity, strength of pastoral care, real friendships, and children who feel more confident and ready for what comes next. 100% of boarding parents describe boarding at Highfield as beneficial.
For many local families, boarding offers children greater independence while remaining part of family life. Whether staying one night a week or boarding more regularly, children get extra time with friends, evening and weekend activities, and boarding at a pace that feels right for their family. This is often where our UK families begin, and where the case for boarding starts to make itself.
Boarding is also a deeply valued part of school life for our Armed Forces families. For generations, military families have trusted Highfield to provide consistency, stability and genuinely strong pastoral care during deployment, relocation or family separation. Children benefit from being part of a close-knit community that understands the particular pressures and opportunities of military life, not one learning them for the first time.
For our international families, Highfield is often a child’s first home in the UK. Friendships develop quickly and support is always close at hand. Our September 2025 ISI inspection noted that boarding staff actively encourage children to develop an understanding of, and respect for, the diverse backgrounds and cultures represented in the boarding community, exactly the kind of environment that helps a child settle fast without losing their own identity in the process.
Whatever the reason for choosing boarding, children become part of something bigger than themselves, living alongside friends from different cultures, learning to support one another, and forming relationships that outlast their time at Highfield.
Our Boarding Team
Boarding at Highfield is led, quite literally, from the top. Our Head, Suzannah Cryer, was formerly Head of Boarding herself, so boarding decisions here are made by someone who has lived experience of running a boarding house. That matters when it comes to how seriously boarding is resourced, staffed and prioritised across the whole school.
Day to day, boarding is led by Tom Gloster, Head of Boarding and Boys’ Houseparent, who lives on site with his wife Ashleigh, their two children, and their dogs Bluebell and Snowdrop. Having boarded himself as a child, Tom understands both the excitement and the challenges of living away from family, and believes some of the most valuable lessons in life come from belonging to a caring community.
Girls’ Houseparent Abbie Brown shares that philosophy, shaped by her own experience living and working overseas. “I encourage the girls to look out for one another through every high and low; kindness is key, both to others and to ourselves, and we are all here to raise one another up.”
Our youngest boarders have their own dedicated junior corridors, with their own dorms and bathrooms, and a dedicated junior boarding assistant whose role is focused entirely on them, so no younger child is simply folded into the wider house without someone directly responsible for how they’re settling in.
Together, this team, alongside matrons, nurses and graduate assistant, have created a culture where children quickly become part of an extended family. New boarders are welcomed by buddies, supported by staff who know them as individuals and encouraged to embrace the school’s values: Be Kind, Be Courageous, Be You. Whether a child lives twenty minutes away or thousands of miles away, they become part of a community where friendship, kindness and belonging sit at the heart of everyday life.
The approach to boarding is excellent and there’s a great balance of freedom and guidance.
Boarding Options
Boarding that fits around modern family life
No two children are the same, and neither are their families. That is why our boarding provision offers a range of options designed to provide flexibility while preserving the strong boarding culture that families value so highly. We understand that boarding is a personal choice and that every family’s circumstances are different. That is why our model has been designed to give flexibility while ensuring children still settle into a routine that feels safe, familiar and sustainable.
Families can choose set nights termly, book additional nights when needed and feel confident that their child will always have their own bed and personal space. We do not hot-bed. We want children to feel that their room, their bed and their place in the house are truly their own.
That combination of flexibility and stability is important. It allows children to enjoy the benefits of boarding without feeling that boarding is something done to them rather than for them.
Available from Year 4 to Year 8, full boarding gives children the complete week, including Saturday and Sunday nights, and full immersion in the boarding community. About a third of our boarders choose this option, drawing on a rich programme of evening and weekend activities and the deeper friendships that come from being together for longer.
*
Available from Year 3 to Year 8, and chosen by around a third of our boarders, weekly boarding means arriving Monday morning and returning home Saturday, spending the school week fully immersed in the life of the boarding house. Weekly boarding gives children the rhythm of boarding life, while still keeping weekends at home for family time.
*
Flexi boarding is a gentle and flexible introduction to boarding, allowing children to enjoy the benefits of being part of the boarding community while fitting around family life and outside commitments. It is ideal for children who are ready for a regular routine but who still need flexibility.
- Years 3–6: minimum one night per week
- Years 7-8: minimum two nights per week
Families choose set nights termly, helping children settle into a routine and feel secure in the house. This is where our third group of boarders sit, and where many full and weekly boarders started out.
Trying boarding should feel exciting rather than daunting. That is why we offer trial nights, giving children the opportunity to experience boarding in a relaxed way before making a longer-term commitment. Often, one night is all it takes for a child to realise how much they enjoy it.

Our Boarding House
Our boarding house is home to up to 130 children from Year 3 to Year 8 alongside our Head of Boarding and Boys’ Houseparent, Girls’ Houseparent, and team of enthusiastic graduate assistants and sits at the centre of our school. It is a lively, warm and welcoming place where children sleep, socialise, laugh, relax and build friendships that last a lifetime.
Children frequently describe the boarding house as feeling like one large family. That sense of belonging is one of the reasons boarding is so cherished by those who choose it.
The house is divided into a girls’ end (12 dorms) and a boys’ end (10 dorms), each with its own common room and multiple bathrooms. Our junior boarding corridors provide dedicated dorms and bathrooms for our youngest boarders, ensuring they are close to key staff, including a specific junior boarder assistant.
At the centre of the house is the matrons’ workroom – the place where everything from missing socks to homesickness to an urgent bit of uniform advice gets sorted with warmth, care and good humour. Our matrons are central to daily life in boarding and are often described by families as a second set of mothers.
Our Dorms
There are 22 dorms across two floors, ranging from four to ten beds. Dorm size and composition are chosen carefully for each child, some children settle better in a small, quiet dorm, others thrive in a bigger one, and who they share with is never left to chance.
One of the many benefits of boarding is learning to become part of a tight-knit community and forming new relationships with ease. Your child will experience living, working and socialising with a diverse group of children. Understanding how to interact with and relate to people with different characteristics and interests is one of the many benefits boarding has to offer.
Our dorms help facilitate this learning process. Dorm groups change each term, helping children broaden their friendships and become more adaptable and confident within the community. Your child’s feelings are always listened to and valued and dorms are structured carefully so your child will always be sharing with a least one chosen friend.
Every boarder has their own bed, regardless of how many nights they board. We do not hot-bed. Therefore, each child has their own personal space and is actively encouraged to make it feel like home with photos, blankets, posters and favourite things from home. We know children settle best when they feel both secure and able to express themselves.
Daily Life at Highfield Boarding
Evenings
As the school day draws to a close at 4.40pm the boarding evening is just beginning. The evenings should feel like your child’s own time – this is extremely important to us, and them. Until 5.30pm your child will be able to choose what do. They are able to join other boarders and day children in one of our inspiring clubs or some days they may choose to enjoy the simple luxury of changing into their home clothes and sitting out on Chapel field and casually chatting with a group of friends.
After activities the bell is rung and prep starts promptly at 5.30pm. This time is supervised by an academic member of staff to support your child and help them to complete work effectively. As children get closer to end-of-term exams, time will be allotted for revision sessions in the evening and staff will be on hand to help your child prepare for upcoming assessments and tests across all subjects.
At the end of prep time the children enjoy supper together in the main dining hall. But the evening doesn’t stop there. After their meal, the boarders are provided with a list of evening activities on offer. They can choose to relax with a film, enjoy a friendly game of table football or dance the night away at a disco. We also help keep our boarders informed of current affairs by providing age-appropriate newspapers in our three common rooms.
Bedtimes are staggered depending on year groups. For our youngest children, bedtime is 8.00pm, and up to 8.40pm for our senior boarders. This is followed by quiet time with some reading or listening to a story before lights out.
Throughout the year boarders are thrilled by our ‘showstopper’ evenings. These include highly-anticipated activities such as the colour run, slip ‘n’ slide and the inter-dorm dance competition. These events are extremely popular and often see children who might not normally stay that particular evening booking an extra night so they don’t miss out.
If your child chooses to learn a musical instrument time will be allocated in the evening to head over to our Music School to practise.
Weekends
All children in Year 5 and above attend school on Saturday. Saturday’s schedule consists of a combination of curriculum extension activities with sports fixtures, bringing together academic challenge and the traditional Prep School sporting experience.
Weekends are cherished time for our full boarders. There is a more leisurely pace, and children get to enjoy more of their favourite part of boarding – being with their friends. Saturday evenings are immense fun. After some down time and supper, Saturdays often involve relaxing with a film and enjoying a cheeky treat of popcorn or milkshakes.
Sundays offer a gentle start to the day with a ‘pyjama breakfast’ at 9am. Each weekend there is a either an on-site activity such as zorbing, a scavenger hunt or circus skills or off-site activities such as bowling in Guildford, visiting the cinema in Portsmouth or ice-skating in Winchester. Our Secret Santa at the end of the autumn term is always extremely popular and often sees our weekly boarders staying for the weekend.
We have exeat weekends throughout the year. We have four in the autumn term, two before and two after half term. The spring term follows the same pattern but there is only one exeat weekend after half term in the summer term.
Exeat weekends are obligatory. The school closes for the weekend and is open again on Sunday evening for our full boarders to return. Exeats are treasured by children and their families. Our international children head out to their guardians’ houses to enjoy some time away from school. Boarders who have parents overseas are often invited to stay with friends, which is a lovely option in addition to seeing their guardian.
Food and Nutrition
One thing is for sure – your child will not go hungry. The day kicks off with a filling breakfast buffet. Your child has a plethora of choices to suit their mood. There is always a hot option such as beans on toast, potato waffles or porridge, as well as a full counter of fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals and pastries.
Morning break is at 10.30am. To provide your child with a slow release of energy to keep them focused until lunch they will have a carbohydrate-based snack. Lunch break is at 12.45pm until 1.45pm. The time your child will be called for lunch rotates throughout the week, so sometimes they will eat first and then enjoy the fresh air and sometimes the other way around. To maintain your child’s energy levels throughout the day they are offered a snack during afternoon break at 3.15pm.
Supper is served from 6.15pm and offers your child the comfort of a delicious homecooked meal after a busy day. Children and boarding staff all sit down together and often the Nurse joins too. All meal times offer a selection of hot and cold dishes, as well as options for children with a range of dietary requirements. We use locally grown and environmentally sustainable food. We are committed to making as much use as appropriate of organic, natural food products and Fairtrade produce and to eliminate genetically-modified food and potentially harmful food additives in all of your child’s food.
And in case that’s not enough – toast and milk is available to your child in the dining hall every evening before bed to ensure they don’t go to sleep with a rumbling tummy.

Once a Highfieldian, always a Highfieldian. 💚 We loved welcoming one of our former students, Platon, back for a trip down memory lane. Platon’s visit was a chance to show his parents around the school that holds so many memories for him, and revisit some of the places that were such a big part of growing up. He also bumped into a few familiar faces while he was here, catching up with staff and sharing memories from his time at Highfield. It’s not every day you get to hear the impact you’ve had on someone years later, so that was pretty special! However many years pass, there’ll always be a warm welcome waiting for our Highfieldians. ✨ #IndependentSchool #OldHighfieldian #Alumni #SchoolCommunity #Memories
Our holiday club golfers didn’t miss a beat yesterday – even in the heat! ⛳️ And when a shot wasn’t quite up to par? Back they went to try again. An envelope opens. A screen refreshes. And for thousands of young people, a whole world of possibility sits on the other side. Today, on A-Level Results Day, we’re thinking especially of our Old Highfieldians from the Class of 2021, as they see the results of all the hard work that has brought them to this moment. Whatever path you take from here, we can’t wait to see what you do next. And remember, there is never only one route to where you want to go. ✨ #ALevelResultsDay #Classof2021 #SchoolAlumni #OldHighfieldians #FuturePossibilities
“Education is facing one of the most significant periods of change in a generation.” Earlier this year, our Raising the Future conference brought together voices from across education and beyond to explore how we better prepare young people for the world ahead. The resulting White Paper was shared with the Government, and now the @educationgovuk has responded. It’s encouraging to see many of the issues we raised reflected in the Government’s plans for curriculum reform, particularly around digital literacy and preparing young people for their futures. But we believe change needs to happen faster. 🔗 Full details in our press release – link in bio. We’re incredibly lucky to have teachers who don’t just encourage our children to follow their passions, but lead by example too! A huge good luck to our very own @sumattingly, who is representing South Africa at the World Cup Masters Hockey Championships. 🏑 Su and the RSA team play their first match tonight. Let’s give Su a big Highfield and Brookham cheer in the comments 👏
The musical adventure continued at Highreach yesterday with an energetic drumming workshop! 🥁 Led by the sounds of the drums, the children proudly paraded a flag they had decorated earlier in the day before raising it. Sometimes creativity isn’t about what you make, it’s about how it makes you feel. Using lavender rosemary and other natural materials collected from around the school grounds, our Nature Crafting Holiday Club spent time creating their own woven artwork. 🌿 The scent of the herbs, the different textures and the chance to slow down made it a really calming activity. As they worked, children were also developing patience, concentration and fine motor skills, carefully weaving each stem into place. #IndependentSchool #HolidayClub #Hampshire #NatureCraft #WellbeingActivity

Houston, we have no problems… just lots of crating! 🚀 It would be easy to think crafting is just about the finished creation, but it’s the skills built along the way that really matter. Threading cord for macramé for example, builds hand-eye coordination and precision, the kind our children rely on in sport, DT and everyday tasks. Our holiday clubs are full of moments like this, skills that quietly build in the background! #IndependentSchool #Liphook #HolidayClubs #IndependentSkills #Crafting
Today at Bushcraft Holiday Club, the children learned how to weave their own survival keyrings. It took patience to master the technique, but by the end of the session they had made something genuinely useful. The paracord can replace a broken shoelace, help build a shelter or even secure a hammock! In a world where so much happens on a screen, there’s real value in knowing how to make something useful with your hands. #IndependentSchool #PracticalSkills #OutdoorSkills #HolidayClub #Bushcraft
Dragons have had quite a year at Highfield! First in Shrek and now in our Crafting Holiday Activity Club with @feltybee_crafts 🐉 Using needle felting, the children shaped their very own dragons, a fiddly process that took patience and plenty of concentration.
