Welcoming International Families

Highfield School is a prestigious Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep school in the UK, founded in 1907, with a long history of welcoming families from around the world. We are set in 175 acres of beautiful grounds within the South Downs National Park in the south east of England. London Gatwick and Heathrow airports are just an hour away, making travel to and from school in the holidays easy.

We enjoy outstanding academic success and feed some of the top senior schools in England, including Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Wellington and Marlborough. We recognise that sending your child to a prep school abroad can feel daunting, but at Highfield School we have years of experience settling our international pupils into our school community right from day one.

We enjoy good relationships with a number of agents and we are always happy to hear from agents offering a valued service to families overseas. Our Admissions Registrar, Charlotte Cottrell, would be delighted to assist you with any queries you may have regarding international admissions. Simply drop her an email or contact her via WhatsApp.

The whole school journey

We welcome international students from around the world to Highfield School. Around 20% of our boarders are international, with pupils from Spain, Italy, France and China, to name just a few. Families choose Highfield School because of our strong academic results, broad and skills-based curriculum and focus on wellbeing. We welcome day children into all year groups and boarders from Year 4.

A full academic year

Stay with us for a full academic year. Your child will combine intensive English language support with mainstream academic study. Children are fully integrated into school life from day one, living in our boarding house and participating in the full academic and co-curricular programme, boosting their English language fluency and cultural understanding. This is a particularly popular option for European families when children join us in Year 7 or 8 before they transition to their senior school, but is also available from Year 4.

Short term academic experience

Often a stepping stone for a longer stay, your child can join us for a term to improve their English and experience life in a British boarding school. You are welcome to join us in either the autumn, spring or summer term (autumn term only for Year 8).

A taster of British boarding school life

Our two-week immersion programme is designed for international children who want to live, learn and speak English in a real British school environment on a short-term basis. It is not a summer camp. Your child learns alongside our full-time pupils and becomes part of everyday school life. They will not only learn English, they will live it. The total cost for our full two-week programme is £3,000. Start dates are Sunday 20th September, Sunday 31st January or Sunday 13th June. Find out more here.

Highfield School is very special to us. Thanks to the warm, experienced and passionate teachers, my daughter is very confident, and has gone on to flourish at her senior school.”

Gateway to Top Senior Schools

For international families looking to move on to some of the best independent senior schools in the UK, joining Highfield School provides distinct advantages. Joining our school gifts your family with time to explore the many senior school options available and to benefit from the wealth of experience our Head has in this area. Mrs Cryer works with all our families to help them find the right fit for their child.

We are an academically successful school. Our children have been awarded over 130 senior school scholarships since 2014, across a range of disciplines including academic, art, design technology, sport, drama and music. Many of these scholarships have been awarded to our international pupils. The remarkable success of our scholarship programme is a key reason parents choose a Highfield School education for their child.

Our smaller family environment is the perfect preparation for senior school. It helps your child build confidence in studying away from home, and their independence grows exponentially as they absorb the full boarding experience. By the time they transition to their chosen senior school in Year 9, they will be ready to take on the challenges ahead, ready to flourish from day one.

Thriving Boarding

Our boarding provision has always been an integral part of Highfield School and its continued popularity reflects just how well we do it. Our full boarding is perfect for children whose families may be overseas, and our buoyant boarding community ensures that no child ever feels alone when their parents are out of the country.

The children who board all become part of a large extended family. We ensure they are cared for, looked after and receive the attention they deserve, just as they would if they were at home. Every evening the whole boarding community, including staff, sit and eat dinner together. Our international children benefit from the balance of the big, bustling boarding community during the week and the more intimate atmosphere of the weekends.

My son joined in Year 7 from another continent. The team helped him to become an integral part, not only of the school but of the country. Highfield School has been the best experience for him.

Academic Ambition

Our curriculum is designed to ensure children are fully prepared for exams by providing plenty of time for the core subjects, as well as breadth through our sport, performing arts and visual arts lessons. And the opportunities don’t end there. Our extensive extra-curricular programme offers endless opportunities, from bushcraft to refining a golf swing on our own course.

Our exceptional teachers and rich curriculum fully prepare children for the ISEB exams sat in Year 6. Children who join us in Year 7 without having already sat these examinations will have the opportunity to take them in their first term with us. We continue to prepare children for Common Entrance in the core subjects: English, Maths and Science. Our scholarship programme is for Year 8 pupils showing great strength across the board, extending beyond the normal demands of the curriculum to help prepare children with real aptitude to apply for a senior school scholarship.

An excellent curriculum and an imaginative approach which engages and motivates pupils of all ages.

Immersive English Language

We welcome children from many different countries. Our school community currently includes over ten different nationalities beyond the UK, bringing great vibrancy and enrichment to school life and a wonderful opportunity for both children and staff to celebrate diversity and inclusion.

If English is not your child’s first language, Highfield School provides a full immersion experience. Children make rapid progress once they arrive, though they do need sufficient spoken and written English before arrival to be able to follow lessons. When a new pupil joins, our specialist English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher carries out an individual assessment of their English language skills, then contacts parents directly to discuss and agree the right level of ongoing support for their child. This is provided at an additional cost where needed.

Our admissions process ensures we maintain a dynamic mix of nationalities and never allow any single one to dominate. This means your child will always be motivated to speak English and become fully accustomed to British traditions and culture.

Visas, Guardians and Practical Logistics

We understand that moving your child to study in the UK involves more than just choosing the right school, it means navigating visas, guardianship and the practical realities of life at a distance. Our experienced Admissions Registrar, Charlotte Cottrell, supports every family through this process, including CAS and visa applications, so you’re never left to work it out alone.

Visas.

It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure their child has the correct permission to study in the UK, but we make the process as smooth as possible. As your child’s sponsor, we issue a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS), which can be arranged up to six months before your child’s studies begin. If your child is joining us as a day pupil, one parent may instead apply for a Parent of a Child Student Visa. Please note that any child whose studies we sponsor must move to full boarding from the age of 12.

Guardians.

If you live outside the UK, your child will need an educational guardian, accredited by AEGIS or the Boarding Schools’ Association, to represent you and support your child while they’re with us. Guardians must be at least 25, fluent in English, resident within 90 minutes of the school, and either a British citizen or UK permanent resident. They play a genuinely important role — from being a point of contact in an emergency, to arranging safe travel during the holidays, to providing a proper home (never a hotel or Airbnb) if your child isn’t returning home for a break. We’re happy to talk you through exactly what this involves and support you in finding the right person.

Fees and travel.

International fees include a termly international supplement covering visa sponsorship, and we ask for a year’s tuition fees in advance (one term for families joining us from Europe). In line with UK Visas and Immigration requirements, we also ask sponsored families to keep us updated on travel plans during school breaks — simply so we know your child is safe and accounted for at all times.
