Welcome to Highfield

Welcome to Highfield, an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 8-13. We’re located in 175 acres of stunning grounds within the South Downs National Park in Liphook, and welcome families from across Hampshire, West Sussex and Surrey.

Phillip Evitt

Headmaster

It’s difficult to know where to start when describing Highfield. I could begin by telling you that we offer a simply outstanding prep school education. Or enthuse about our beautiful location in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Or list our enviable facilities from Science labs, Music rooms, DT and Art Studio to natural playing fields and all-weather Astro. Each and every attribute is vitally important, but I don’t believe it is what will ultimately be your deciding factor in choosing Highfield for your child. This will undoubtedly be a feeling, an instinct, you’ll simply know if the fit is right.

Our promise to you is a simple one – we will deliver the best education possible. Our first-rate teachers will deliver a structured curriculum with progressive and dynamic content that will ignite a passion for learning in every child. Children at Highfield are full of life, full of enthusiasm for everything that goes on, and much does go on! Our curriculum is broad, offering an astonishing diversity of opportunity. Our teaching looks beyond the curriculum to skills learnt through sport, drama, music and art and our children learn skills that they will draw on as they progress on their journey through education and life.

Our pupils’ wellbeing is at the core of all that we do. Children need to feel secure and settled in order to be able to learn successfully and thrive. Our teachers get to know each child as an individual, so their unique needs are truly recognised and understood.

All this may sound too good to be true, but it is evident in our success. Highfield has an outstanding record of scholarships and in securing our pupils entry to their first-choice senior school. Children leave us as confident young people, well prepared and excited for their next steps at some of the top senior schools in the country.

Of course, you can’t enjoy a real sense of Highfield’s magic by visiting this website or reading our prospectus. The only way to discover if we are the right school for your family is to visit us and experience it for yourselves, and I hope what you see here encourages you to do just that. I very much look forward to welcoming you to Highfield in the future.

An excellent and very broad educational experience, combined with first-class pastoral care, great facilities in a wonderfully inspiring location

Our Focus

Our focus is simple. We deliver the best possible prep school education. We want children at Highfield to grow up with a love of learning and to succeed academically. But we also want to help children discover their strengths, uncover their passions and develop life skills. Your child is unique, and it is our job to get to know them as an individual, to nurture their talents and support them through any challenges. At Highfield, we deliver an all-round education that prepares children for their future. As children leave Highfield for the next stage of their education, they are ready and well equipped for whatever life brings.

Boarding

When considering boarding, two key questions parents ask are 'is it right for my child?' and 'is it still relevant in today’s world?' We can help you explore the answer to both questions, but the answer is definitely 'yes' – we currently have the highest number of boarders since compulsory boarding was abolished in 1999! Boarding helps children develop independence and individuality and gifts them time to concentrate on their studies, to enjoy a broad range of activities and enjoy extended time with their friends.

Boarding at Highfield Prep School is entirely optional. Every family is unique and free to decide whether boarding is right for their family. Children have the option to board from Year 4, when they join our Junior Boarding House. This is a cosy family home where children ease into boarding in a quieter environment before moving up to the Senior Boarding House in Year 6. Our most popular years for boarding are Year 7 and Year 8, when families think about building strong foundations for the transition to senior school.

Many of our boarders live locally, in Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex, but our happy boarding community includes Armed Forces families, international pupils and London families.

Full Boarding

Full boarding is seven nights per week and is our most popular option. Families are busier than ever and boarding gives parents career flexibility, eliminates daily homework battles and gives children extra time to devote to studies and interests. Children can go home after sports matches on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but most choose to stay for the fun programme of weekend activities.

Steps-To-Boarding

Our Steps-To-Boarding initiative is for two or three nights per week and offers a gentle start to boarding. It is especially popular with children in Year 4 and Year 5. As with full boarding, there is a 'no hot-bedding’ policy, children have their own bed in one of our modern dormitories that typically house between four and eight children.

Occasional Boarding

We offer families occasional boarding on an ad-hoc basis, to cover, for an example, an extended business trip. This option is subject to availability and children wouldn’t necessarily be in the same dorm each time.

The approach to boarding is excellent - we love the Junior Boarding House to start and there's a great balance of freedom and guidance

BSA Covid-Safe Charter

We are proud to have committed to adhering to the Boarding Schools' Association's (BSA) Covid-Safe Charter. Established in May 2020, the charter aims to ensure the safety of all pupils and staff as schools continue to operate in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Find out how we are managing boarding safely during the pandemic.

Any questions?

How are the dorms structured?

Dorms vary in size. There are four to ten children per dorm, all of whom are in the same year group. Children are asked to choose a group of friends with whom they would like to share. Each term we change the dorms in order to help facilitate new friendships and to help children learn how to get on with others - an important life skill.

How many boarders are there?

Numbers always increase throughout the year. The Summer Term is the most popular term for boarding because it's the time families start to think about the transition to senior school. We typically have around 130 children boarding during the week and around 20 steps-to-boarding children. This is around 50% of Highfield Prep pupils.

What do the evenings look like for boarders?

School finishes at 4.40pm. This is when the evening begins for our boarders. A typical evening looks like this:

4.40pm-5.40pm: After-school clubs, which many of the day children are involved in, followed by prep

6.30pm: Dinner, followed by a varied and extensive range of evening activities from 7pm.

7.30pm-8.00pm: Year group bedtime bells are rung and children start their bedtime routines, including showering, toast and brushing of teeth.

Throughout the evening, children are also able to use this time to relax in their dorms or call home using school phones or FaceTime on school iPads.

What happens at the weekend?

All Highfield Prep School all pupils attend Saturday school. Lessons run until 12.30pm, followed by afternoon sports matches. These usually finish at 3.30pm when day children go home. Some boarders decide to go home on occasional weekends, but many stay at the weekend to enjoy the fun and varied activities programme. On Saturday afternoons, the children are encouraged to play with their friends and make the most of the fantastic facilities we have here at Highfield. Saturday evenings are always great fun in the boarding houses, with many entertaining activities in which to get involved, such as our Saturday evening films with popcorn and ice cream sundae bar.

Sundays offer a much-needed relaxed start and the children enjoy a lie in until 9.00am. The children then head down for a 'pyjama breakfast' which keeps them going until Sunday Brunch or Lunch. Sunday activities follow, either in house or on trips to wonderful and diverse destinations.

What happens on Exeat weekends?

We have Exeat weekends every half term (two either side of half term in the Autumn Term and one either side of half term in the spring and summer terms). The weekend starts at 4.40pm on the Friday and all boarders, including our international pupils, head home for the weekend. For our international students, this may mean spending the weekend with their friends or a guardian. The school is closed until boarders return at 7.30pm on the Sunday night.

Who is there to look after my child at night?

We have four fantastic houseparents across the junior and senior boarding houses. They are supported by team of eight graduate assistant teachers. Each night, we always have at least six members of resident staff on duty. They are there to support any child who may feel unsettled in the night. If your child is unwell, they will be able to see our nurse in the morning.

After Highfield

Highfield is a gateway to some of the leading senior schools in the country. One of our key priorities is to guide and support parents to help them find the right school for their child. It's genuinely difficult to find a bad school, they are all impressive, it's simply about finding the right one – and we take great pride in our flawless record of securing every child’s place at their first choice senior school.

Moving on to senior school is a big step in a child’s educational journey and it's our goal to ensure that they thrive and succeed at their next school, as they have with us. Finding the right school is an exciting task and we ensure that it is a collaborative process between us, the parents and the child.

One of the real benefits of a Highfield education is that it allows parents to keep their options open.

Whether you choose to go on to day or boarding, co-educational or single sex, entry at 11+ or 13+, Highfield provides a wonderful and relevant experience for your child, ensuring they leave us as happy and well-rounded individuals, full of enthusiasm to tackle the next stage of their learning journeys.

And leaving Highfield is not the end of the story. We welcome all former pupils, parents and staff to join our thriving Old Highfieldian community.

Old Highfieldians

Old Highfieldians – or former pupils, parents and staff – form part of a worldwide community offering a wealth of networking opportunities, whether for friendship, business or re-acquaintance. There are plenty of ways you can be involved in Highfield life long after you've left, including popular annual reunions for former pupils and teachers both at Highfield and in central London. At Christmas, we hold a carol service for Old Highfieldians, and many other events are added to the calendar throughout the year. We are always delighted to receive news from Old Highfieldians for our OH Magazine, so if you have any articles, photographs or anecdotes you would like to share, please email us.

Old Highfieldian Golf Society

The Highfield Association Golf Society (HAGS) is open to all former parents, pupils and staff, as well as our current parents. Our next meeting is at Liphook Golf Club on Thursday 8th September 2022. We usually meet at 8am for bacon baps and coffee with a view to teeing off from 9am. The golf will be a Stableford competition with a number of prizes, including longest drive and nearest the pin. There will be a prize for the team with the best combined score and the prized Mills Cup for the top individual score. This will be followed by a two-course buffet lunch. The cost is £45 for Liphook members, £100 for non-members, £60 for under-25s.
